About This Case

De Garengeot Hernia

De Garengeot hernia is an extremely rare condition where the vermiform appendix becomes incarcerated within a femoral hernia. First described by French surgeon Rene Jacques Croissant de Garengeot in 1731, this condition accounts for only 0.5-1% of all femoral hernias.

Why It Matters

  • • Pre-operative diagnosis in <50% of cases
  • • Risk of appendiceal perforation
  • • Requires combined surgical approach
  • • High morbidity if missed

African Context

  • • First reported case from sub-Saharan Africa
  • • Limited CT availability at district level
  • • High index of suspicion needed
  • • Contributes to global surgical literature

This example demonstrates how we help surgeons publish rare case findings, contributing valuable data to the global surgical literature while meeting the specific requirements of the South African Journal of Surgery.
